The duality of April

Is April spring? We’ve had a few good days. Working outside and biking…

Then it gets cold, grey and rainy. Almost spring maybe, but there are flowers blooming and buds on the trees.

And it’s not as cold as it was, and there isn’t any snow on the ground so there is that!

Beating winter narcolepsy

I’ve finally stopped disco napping after putting the pingus to bed. It only took several weeks of day light saving time and it getting lighter in the evening for me to grow out of my winter narcolepsy. Because of this I can’t be too hard on the pingus taking longer to fall asleep.

The weather is still meh.

Still wearing two pairs of pants but have packed my snow boots away. Over the weekend we got out for our first Von Trapp family bike outing at a local nature park.

It was cold but we had a good cycle. Looking forward to being able to picnic (who am I?) and not be chasing warm patches in the sun.

The last few days it’s all been about building and painting. Shocker!

After a break of a few weeks Zoey asked me to help build a roller coaster. She told me we’d need tape. She was right.

We’ve done big paints for the last two mornings. It started with some color mixing, and then moved on to painting their engines. A few weeks ago they turned boxes into engines with cotton balls for steam and circles for wheels. All their own ideas. They finished them as much as they wanted and I left them in an accessible spot in case they wanted to play or do something more to them.

Monday they started paining them and the engines morphed into homes for Pooh and Eeyore. Took all their will power not to stuff all their furry friends in straight away. When they were almost dry rabbits and the like started sneaking in. Bless.

Zen and the art of balance bike maintenance*

I walked into the kitchen to this:

I chuckled when I saw them and was promptly told off as this is “work”. Nomi and Zoey are of course correct, bike maintenance is very important, and given how important their balance bikes are to the family it needs to be taken seriously.

I cannot stress how much we all love their balance bikes. One of the best things we invested in. We wanted to make biking a big part of our family culture and balance bikes got Zoey and Nomi off to a great start.

Once they got the hang of them last spring we were out everyday racking up the miles. Being able to get out of the house for a brisk walk with two toddlers in tow is a huge sanity saver, and they love exploring the neighborhood, going fast down hills, and working on “tricks”. In the height of the summer we were out after breakfast – glorious!

We are moving the girls over to super light weight pedal bikes shortly (no training wheels), and we’ve got a bike rack for the car now so we’ll be able to go out to the canal paths and parks with all our bikes. Just need all this snow to melt and temperatures to warm up.

-2C, feels warm

Alex is trying to convince me that the worst of winter is behind us and that spring is just around the corner. Whilst my weather app agrees with him I am dubious (but hopeful).

February has been such a long and cold month. There aren’t even hints of spring in our neck of the woods. Just iced over sidewalks and snow. That said it was relatively warm yesterday and we headed out for a balance bike ride. Nomi and Zoey only had to wear two pairs of trousers and they decided to break out their sunnies.

It was glorious to be out and not beaten down by the wind. It was nice enough for us to do our usual two mile circuit.

Maybe spring is on the way…
