Updates from Babyland

My mum arrived on Monday night armed with hats. Proper knitted baby bonnets that I wore 35 years ago. These are bonnets that will stay put on heads unlike everything else we’ve tried. I’m getting fed up of going out and people telling me that I need to put hats on the babies when the stroller is littered with hatty debris. So now I’ll have people commenting on the vintage nature of these hats.

Naomi in another old hat

Last week was my first full week of being on my own Monday through Friday, and it was a busy week. The girls had their one month check-up, and hip scans at the hospital (all fine). Their pediatrician is happy with their progress. Zoey is weighing in at 8lbs, and Naomi (the chubby chubbster) at 8lbs 9oz. Go feeding on demand – though how you could do it any other way as baby’s have such variable feeding needs. Any way, it feels good that despite the interrupted sleep we are obviously doing something right.

I’m even getting better at wrangling both babies at the same time when we are out. I’ve figured out the easiest ways to handle both babies at the doctors, and I wasn’t phased by the SIX diaper changes at the pediatrician’s office (every time they were seen by the nurse and then doctor they’d both pooped – lovely) or that Zoey peed all over the technicians and the table when she was having her hip scanned at the hospital.

But, that’s being a parent isn’t it. It’s all bodily fluids that need mopping up: pee, poo, vomit, spit-up, drool, etc. You know what the difference is between parents and grandparents? Whilst my mum was dressing up the girls to go out I was washing poo out of Naomi’s clothes after a bottom explosion, and this was what I came back to: furry jackets, and socks over onesies.

The girls after being "grannified"

The girls have started to loose their first round of baby hair, and whilst the second round starts to grow in the mixture of short and “long” makes them look a little punky (now I understand why some cultures shave baby’s heads at one month). Dare I say rather like the hair style of the new Lisbeth Salander in the remake of the Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.

Patchy head but like Lisbeth Zoey has mad hacking skills

Perhaps they need little leather jackets, and wash-off tattoos to street up their image…

I used to get comments on my kid being bare-headed. I’ve gotten used to disapproval from strangers.

Glad the babies are growing well!
